1964 in Mountain Basketball
The year 1964 was one of my favorite times in high school sports in our region because, like the mid-1950s, this year had a host of very good basketball players. This article is about all those guys who kept us all smiling as we crowded into the gyms for entertainment. As you read these names you may recall some great moments of basketball if you are a certain age. Some became legends, others became role models. In that time basketball shaped their lives as it did the spectators’.
Heading the All-State 1st team list of players were Bob Tallent of Maytown and Orville Stepp of Inez. We have featured both players on our Facebook page. David Adams of Russell, Keith Lawson of Garrett, James Turner of Breathitt County, and Danny Ray Hall of Wheelwright were 3rd Team All-State players, as was Glen Combs of Carr Creek. Combs had a great ABA career.
Many players in the region did not make the KHSAA All-State lists that year, but were All-State Honorable Mentions. Some would make the All-State list the following season. Below is a breakdown based on the regions where they played.
