Dear Friend

You are receiving this letter because you care about Eastern Kentucky and our incredible sports legacy. We proudly introduce you to The Mountain Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, a nonprofit, taxexempt organization. Were working to recognize, preserve, and promote the heritage of Eastern Kentucky. You probably know of many individuals and teams from our unique geographical area who have made significant contributions and/or achieved the extraordinary. The Hall of Fame honors these worthy individuals and teams and sets them up as examples for others to emulate. Our mountains have produced 36 state basketball championships, 23 Mr./Miss Basketballs, 38 state football championshipsthree Mr. Footballs, six state baseball championships, and 10 Mr. Baseball/Miss Softballs.

Our longterm vision is to become an integral part of a thriving intergenerational sports and wellness community. Many public and private investments have already been made; but additional funding is needed to complete the next phases. This project will leverage our sports history in four regions and 35 counties (and the former coal camp assets of Wayland) to create jobs and a unique sense of community. We will create valuable and lucrative opportunities to sports teams and organizations throughout the region. And remember, your donations are tax deductible as allowed by law

(1) Completion of Historic Gym Complex, Phase 3&4

Phases 1 and 2 to stabilize the building, install HVAC, and renovate the interior have been completed at a cost of $569,000. Phase 3 will construct an addition to the back of the gym creating locker rooms, accessible restrooms, a concession stand, and completing an indoor walking track. Phase 4 will restore the building’s exterior, provide signage, improve parking, and install fixtures to display Mountain Sports Hall of Fame artifacts. The complex will create job opportunities through rentals to businesses and organizations for meetings, events, and tournaments. Cost estimates to complete phases 3 and 4 is $750,000.

(2) Renovation of Annex Building

To provide dining opportunities for sports camps, tourists, and residents, the annex building next to the gym will be repurposed into a Retro 1950’s Diner with a sports theme. Through private funds raised by Wayland Historical Society, the diner has been constructed and vintage artifacts have been gathered including a jukebox and vending machines. Funding is needed to purchase interior furnishings and appliances, exterior signage, and parking improvements. Cost estimate to complete is $300,000.

(3) Renovation of Former High School Building

The former high school building, next to the gym and annex, will be renovated to provide lodging for sports camp and other events. Designs will be drafted and implemented to construct a new roof, create accessible entrances/exits, develop additional parking, renovate plumbing and electrical fixtures, and construct a ground floor with bunk-style lodging and shared bathroom/shower facilities. Cost estimate to complete is $2.9 million.

There are many opportunities to join us in supporting the Mountain Sports Hall of Fame through volunteerism and financial support. Please contact me to discuss how you can contribute. Thank you for your consideration
