Pete Grigsby Jr.

Pete Grigsby Jr is a name readily recognized around the 15th Region.  Pete was an honorable mention All State basketball player as a junior at Martin High School in the 1950-1951 season.  That year Martin went 34-4, losing to Wayland 70-69 in the District Tournament final and then to Inez in the semi final matchup.

Grigsby’s 1951-52 senior season was a good one for Pete.  His basketball team went 24-11 but lost to Betsy Layne in the District Final and then to Inez in the Regional semifinal.  The 5’10 Grigsby was recognized as a 1st Team All State player.

Grigsby also starred in baseball at Martin and played both sports at the collegiate level.  He went to UK on a basketball scholarship where he was a member of the undefeated 1953-54 team.  Pete transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan for his final two years and played baseball and basketball there.

Grigsby was better at coaching than playing.  He coached MC Napier High School in Perry County and McDowell in Floyd County.  His teams won 73% of their games.  He also coached baseball at both schools.  He was Floyd County Coach of the Year in ‘65, ‘66, ‘67, ‘68, ‘71, and ‘73.He was also a basketball official for several years.

Grigsby was also superintendent of Floyd County Schools, as well as a local sportscaster.

Grigbsy is number 25.

His son, Pete Grigsby III, was an All State Honorable Mention in basketball in 1981 and was 2nd Team All State the following year.  He got into broadcasting and meteorology in his college years at Western Kentucky University and at Brigham Young University.
