Van Lear Basebll

Van Lear always had great baseball teams that played in several leagues over the years.  The pictured team is from around 1920 or so.  Dr Paul B. Hall is pictured on the right end in the back row.  He played second base on many of the Van Lear teams.  Dr Hall is in two college halls of fame, at the University of Louisville and at Kentucky.

When I asked him once about the catcher Bitty Beers having such a great throwing arm, Dr Hall replied “He threw it so hard that most times after the pitcher completed his warm us and Bitty would make the peg to second to work it around the infield, I just let it go on to center field.”

Dr Hall was once offered a contract to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates, as was Danny Blevins in the late 1950s.  Blevins went, but Dr Hall stayed home.
